Using your skis to go uphill as well as down is the essence of ski
touring or ski mountaineering.
By fixing skins to your skis you can escape the lift system and gain height under your own steam; in exchange for the extra effort, you choose where you want to go - to a summit or a col, or perhaps on a journey from hut to hut. Since this type of skiing takes you away from the managed areas of the ski resort, you'll need skills and techniques which might be new to you, as well as the ability to ski any snow surface confidently. If you are just beginning to venture off piste, a good way to start ski touring is with one-day excursions, which might even use lifts to gain some of the height; in this way it is possible to access some fantastic runs in spectacular scenery. |

If you are more experienced you might want to do a hut-to-hut tour. This is more like backpacking on skis, carrying your own rucksack but enjoying hut life in the evenings; if you want to really get into the mountains, perhaps bag some peaks and have some long descents, this is the way to do it. |
